Maybe you're one of the millions who is having fun with their sewing hobby that saves time and money as well as fostering a sense of deep satisfaction at the end of a project. Or maybe you haven't cut into a piece of fabric for years but would like to get back into making your own clothes. If so, you might be surprised by how feature-laden the current generation of sewing machines has become.
The best sewing machine for you depends on your skill level and budget. Before buying a sewing machine, know your needs and skills. Consider how you might use the machine when your skills improve. Typically, people keep a sewing machine for at least 10 years.
Even the most basic machine should be able to handle a variety of fabrics without stretching or puckering the fabric or producing loose, loopy stitches.
When you sew, be sure to use the right needle. A dull one, or the wrong kind, can bend and damage the fabric and/or machine. Change your needles after every project or when switching fabric types. And at least every two years take your sewing machine in for a tune-up.
Buttonhole functions are either one-step, automatic or four-step. Automatic functions can achieve perfect buttonholes by putting a button in the buttonhole foot and the machine does the programming. One-step buttonholers may allow for sizing by placing a button on the foot and depend on the sewer to turn a dial to achieve results. Four-step buttons require manipulation of a dial, and steps of the buttonholes are completed by different settings.
Machines equipped with double needles (two needles in one shaft) simultaneously sew two lines. These are used in high-end sewing machines, as well as sergers and embroidery machines. Handy for topstitching, there are capabilities for 3-5 needles in some machines.
Generics are not a preferred brand for sewing machine parts. This applies to bobbins and needles as well. Using manufacturers' parts and avoiding makeshift upgrades will achieve quality assurance. Brilliant needlework requires the proper tools.

Europro sewing machine keeps bunching up thread under fabric.?
My dh just bought it and maybe it is threaded wrong. The stitch on top is fine, but turn the material over and it is all bunched up. What could be wrong. The diagrams in the book for threading are hopeless.
Wretched big birdsnest at the beginning of a seam, and then the stitching straightens out farther along (if it doesn't jam completely)? If so, you need to start the seam correctly.
Pay out about 4" of top and bottom threads and place them behind the presser foot. Put the fabric under the presser foot and use the handwheel to lower the needle into the fabric. Drop the presser foot. With your left hand, hold the two tails of the thread behind the presser foot and make a couple of stitches. Drop the tails and sew normally.
OR
The beginning's ok, but there are loops along the underside of the fabric as you sew. If so, you probably didn't thread correctly and actually get the thread into the upper tension. Take the top thread off the machine and RAISE THE PRESSER FOOT. This opens the upper tension so the thread can enter. With manual in hand, rethread the sewing machine - I "floss" the thread into the upper tension. Lower the presser foot only at the end of threading, to give yourself a little more finger room for threading the needle.
IF YOU"VE BEEN MESSING WITH THE UPPER TENSION: set it back to 4. 3.5 - 4.5 is a typical setting that should give you good sewing on most fabrics. If you've changed the bobbin tension, that's probably a "take it back to the shop for proper adjustment" for beginners.
