What's a good sewing machine for a non-beginner?
I have just killed my white sewing machine (as in I knocked it off the table and it broke the frame and jacked up the bobbin. It was a cheap White 3032 I bought for under $100, shook like crazy, but got the job done. I also own a Janome L392 that my husband bought for me 10 years ago for $600. It has never worked right, and although it purrs when it decides it wants to stitch, it mostly just infuriates me so bad I want to throw it across the room. So, I need a new sewing machine! I am not a beginner. I don't want anything computerized or that threads the needle for me. I use my machine nearly daily. I mend, make quilts, sew dresses, curtains, etc. I need something that will hold up well, runs smoothly, and isn't expensive. I don't need a lot of fancy stitches or anything - I just need a workhorse! I've looked at several reviews, but honestly, I don't know the first place to start. Anyone have any advice, so I can get back to making Christmas presents?
I own a number of different sewing machines, some old, some antique and some very new. Some are computerized and some are just basic workhorses.
One of the machines that I own and truly enjoy is the Singer 4423 - a real workhorse. This one is a brute, not fancy just really, really strong. I take this with me when I work on costumes for the theater guild and for our local high school plays and for my granddaughter's dress costumes for dance recitals.
It has the following features: -23 Stitch Patterns
-1,100 Stitches per Minute
-Fully Automatic 1-Step Buttonhole
-Automatic Needle Threader
-Top Drop-in Bobbin
-Class 15 Bobbins
-Stainless Steel Bed Plate
-Adjustable Presser Foot Pressure
-Adjustable Stitch Length & Width
-Drop Feed for free motion sewing
-Heavy Duty Metal Frame for skip-free sewing
-Free Accessories Included
It never skips, except when the needle is dull or bent, it can sew through anything including multiple layers of denim, the button holes are good, but basic. I dare you to break this one, mine has been knocked off tables, pushed over in the middle of stitching, and sews almost as fast as a serger once it is going. It can actually get away from you unless you are set up for long runs.
Don't touch the tension, it is VERY touchy . I took a long time before I was willing to mess with the factory settings. I ended up making the original with a permanent marker before moving them.
You can find these if you look around for around $200 if you are a savy shopper. Saw this on Amazon $150 + shipping. You probably don't need to buy a lot of accessories. So I would stay away from overly packaged deals from shopping services which add a lot of do-dads without a lot of value. I would get a case if you are planning on transporting it. I ended up getting an inexpensive wheeled suitcase so I could carry the machine, sewing supplies, etc. when I took it on a road trip.
