Industrial Sewing Machine Basics
A true industrial sewing machine is designed for stitching things such as car and boat covers or upholstery, sails, tarps, tents, safety harnesses, leather or vinyl and other extra heavy items. The working space is larger than that of a domestic sewing machine, in some cases measuring up to 30 inches or more. Fast speed and a strong motor ensure that even the toughest sewing job can be finished quickly and easily.
While not a substitute for a domestic machine for ordinary home sewing, an industrial model is desirable for anyone who needs to routinely sew heavier items. The machines range in size from portable tabletop models to those requiring special, reinforced stands for support. Prices vary greatly, as well. A basic portable tabletop model is affordable, some costing as little as a few hundred dollars, while the largest machines can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. Used machines can often be found at a substantial discount. Machines are available from many sewing machine dealers or through various websites, and less frequently, from a private party.
An industrial sewing machine is usually very basic. Most are straight-stitch only machines but some do include a zig-zag feature, as well. When available, a built-in or attachable walking-foot further enhances the ease of stitching through multiple layers of thick materials.
When considering the purchase of an industrial sewing machine, realistically assess your needs. Intended sewing projects will dictate what size and type of machine is required. Various machine components may be sold separately; the head and motor, for instance. Be sure to get the total price for all necessary components for any machine being considered.
