Wholesale Boutique online- Embroidery on Tunics and Kurtis-The Indian Scenario

Embroidery is a form of decorative art, where-in the ladies wear like kurti or tunic, or else other apparel is adorned with various ethnic designs, using needle and thread. Hand-embroidery is done by hand, and machine embroidery is done using a sewing machine. Most ladies' wear in India, like the kurti, salwar-kameez, tunics, etc. are richly embroidered depicting ethnic folklore designs. Embroidery is normally done in bright colors, so that it stands out.

Salwaar Kameez is an ethnic attire of women in North India. It is basically a full suit- salwar being worn like a loose trouser, tied around the waist with a cord string and the kameez, like a tunic or a shirt. Women wear salwar kameez with a dupatta, or a chunni. Kurti is a variation of the kameez, being a bit shorter. The design and construction are essentially the same.
The Production Centres- In India, most of the ladies wear is embroidered. The kameez, tunics and Kurtis have typical ethnic designs, reminiscent of the local folklore. Thus, the dresses in Rajasthan have a  "Rajashthani" design, very different from what you find in Punjab or Uttar Pradesh, each having its own peculiar form. In the context of this native art-form, places of repute, are Patiala, Calcutta, Rampur, Bareilley, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kutch and Lucknow.

The persons who actually do the embroidery work, i.e the artists, are called the karigars. Their job is to just to do embroidery work. They work in groups, more often it is a family business, where-in the whole clan is involved. The "art of embroidery" is kept as a closely guarded family secret, only passed on from the parent to the child. It's akin to family treasure. As a consequence of its insulated nature,  a particular clan has its own peculiar form and design of embroidery. Thus Rampur is known for Zardozi, Dabka, Tilla and Patchwork, which are various "types" of embroidery work. Likewise, Lucknow is known for chicken-work and shadow work. Phulkari work comes from Patiala and Kantha from Calcutta.

Apparel Manufacturers who are in the business of ladies wear, normally sub-contract the services of the karigars on "job work" basis. Thus, a full length of cloth shall be cut into pieces, sent for an embroidery job work and then stitched into tunics or Kurtis.
